Restore the Star Campaign Underway!

April 24, 2025

Milford, PA – A growing movement is calling for the restoration of the beloved star on the Milford Knob, a longstanding community landmark that was removed from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA). For decades, the star, a cherished seasonal display maintained by the local Lions Club, was lit during the holiday season and on other historic dates, symbolizing a community spirit of unity, hope and tradition.

Following its removal, many residents have expressed disappointment and a strong desire to see it returned. Advocates for the Restore the Star Committee emphasize its historical and cultural significance, noting that it had become a meaningful part of Milford’s identity.

“The Knob Star was more than just a holiday decoration; it was a symbol of our community's togetherness,” said Fred Weber, a representative of the Restore the Star initiative. “For decades, families have looked up to the Knob and seen that star as a beacon of home and tradition. We are working diligently to find a solution that respects both the regulations and the wishes of our residents.”

A committee of local residents including Shaun Burger and Candace Mahala (both representing the Milford-Matamoras Rotary Club), Fred Weber (Pike County Historical Society), Milford Borough Councilmembers Peter Cooney and Maria Farrell (also both Lions Club members), Mayor Doug Jacobs, former Milford Mayor Sean Strub, William Collins (Simone Collins Landscape Architecture) and Tamara Chant (Chant Real Estate and Pinchot Institute board member) are engaging with local and federal officials to explore potential pathways for reinstating the star.

The committee is circulating to local residents, governmental bodies, businesses and non-profit organizations a sign-on letter, addressed to Congressman Rob Bresnahan Jr, requesting his support for the effort. Community meetings and fundraising efforts are also being planned to advance the effort.

“We are committed to working collaboratively with all the stakeholders to bring the Milford Star back in a way that honors its legacy while adhering to legal and environmental considerations,” said Shaun Burger. “This is about preserving an important piece of our town’s heritage.”

Residents and supporters interested in learning more, joining the effort, signing the letter to Congressman Bresnahan and getting involved can visit RestoretheStar.org or follow on Facebook.
